Caterpillar has announced the expansion of CAT Command for Loading with its D3 Series skid steer loader and compact track loader models. By removing the operator from the machine, Command provides joystick remote operation of the mini skid steer and compact track loader models, enhancing safety and productivity in challenging and potentially hazardous applications.

CAT Command for Loading for skid steer loaders and compact track loaders will be available in two configurations: in line of sight at the jobsite and out of sight from a remote off-site station. Providing the user with the ability to conveniently operate the machine from a safe location, Command supports high machine performance in demanding environments such as material handling, steel mill blast furnaces, industrial and waste operations, demolition and decommissioning.

A dealer-installed field kit makes any CAT D3 mini skid steer loader or compact track loader model ready to go. The line-of-sight system includes lights, microphone, wireless receiver and antennas mounted on the roof of the cab, with a command activation switch mounted behind a lockable door with ground level access. The out-of-sight system adds front, rear and side cameras for a 360° view. Because Command controls are integrated with the machine’s electronics, users get the same response to controls as if they were operating in the cab, allowing productivity to be maintained at a distance.

Flexible Remote Configurations

The direct-view loading control system comes complete with a lightweight and compact control console supported by a comfortable shoulder strap. Machine controls such as machine start/stop, bucket rack/tilt and lift/lower, speeds, horn, slow motion controls and additional hydraulic functions are easily accessible through the control console’s ergonomic control layout.

Two different line-of-sight consoles will be available to meet customer needs, each providing different levels of functionality and control through sophisticated hydromechanical fixtures. The operating range of both cantilever controls within line-of-sight increases to 300 m (984 ft.) for convenient remote operation.

To ensure that the user is in control of the machine at all times, CAT’s built-in electronics activate several safety features to stop all machine movements if: the All-stop switch is pressed; the Command Stop Switch is activated; wireless communication is lost; a serious fault is detected; or the control console is tilted more than 60 degrees from its normal operating position.

Individual Command Station.

Command for Loading’s out-of-sight solution includes a modular, customizable command station that places users in a familiar and comfortable seated position that mimics traditional machine control. A single user can connect to multiple machines from a single station while controlling a single machine. The station is also compatible with other Command offerings for CAT equipment, such as excavators, bulldozers and small wheel loaders.

Station components include joystick and foot pedals for all of the company’s Command-enabled machines. A touch screen mount is built into the design of the station to control the machine, and universal screen mounts are included for mini skid steer or compact track loader camera displays. An emergency remote shutoff switch is located on the control panel to quickly stop all machine movements. On the jobsite, an optional remote All-stop switch is available for personnel working outside the Command line of sight with skid steers or compact track loaders.

According to Caterpillar, the projected availability of Command for Load for the CAT D3 series skid steer and compact track loaders is in the third quarter of 2022.
